Anyone else have champagne taste on a box wine budget or is it just me? Last year, my husband and I bought our first home with the intention of creating a cozy and warm space while still maintaining our budget. Let me just say, we had no way of knowing how quickly over-budget we would go with just a few updates here and there. Which meant when it came to our walls and storage, we needed to get a little creative. Luckily for us, we found a cost-effective way to create this useful and cute(!) peg shelf.
DIY Peg Shelf
You Need
- Planks of wood (2)
- Wood glue
- Wood putty
- Clamps
- Cabinet screws
- Stainless steel screws
- Wall anchors
- Paint and brushes
- Pegs (5)
- Sandpaper
How To
1. Cut your planks to size; my top board measures 5 inches x 50 inches and my bottom board (against wall) measures 8 inches x 50 inches.
2. Using your sandpaper, smooth out any rough edges, creating an even and flat surface on the planks.
3. Paint your boards and pegs with your color of choice; I chose a beautiful neutral hue from BEHR called Rice Crackers (S240-2). You may need to apply a few coats of paint.
4. Add wood glue to the top edge of the bottom board and attach it to the underside of the top board, creating a ninety-degree angle.
5. Clamp the boards together and let dry for 24 hours before removing the clamps. While the boards are still clamped together, attach the cabinet screws through the topside of the top board and through the bottom board.
6. Space out your pegs evenly on your bottom board and screw them into place.
7. Use your wood putty to cover up any gaps between the board and pegs as well as over the screw tops you inserted when the boards were clamped together. Let dry and then paint over wood putty.
8. Hang the finished shelf onto the wall and style with your favorite odds and ends.
